Synchronizing system time to GPS time

Pinouts: Pin 5: ground (GPS and DB9 side) Pin 9: PPS (GPS side out, DVR side in)

The receiver outputs the PPS signal on pin 12 of the receivers Conxall ports, but if you are using the standard P/N 30945 power/data cable to run the receiver the PPS strobe is output on pin 9 of the DE9 serial connector. The PPS signal is output as long as the receiver has a position fix and does not need to be enabled or configured from the receiver.

  • From the File menu, select Install/Uninstall Filter and choose Timing Filter

  • In the next window click Add, Streams5 will open a dialog box that defaults to the Streams5 timing filter directory

  • Select the SPAN Timing Filter dll file. If you don't have it installed for some reason, download and install it now: spantimingfilter.zip

  • Now the filter is installed and you will see it in the installed filters window. Click on “done” to proceed

  • We must configure the filter, so from the DVR menu choose Timing Filter Setup

  • You will see the following window with a drop down box that is defaulted to the system time

  • Select the SPAN Timing Filter that you just installed and click on close. You may wish to configure the filter - right now there's only one option that you can change, and that is turning logging on / off.

  • Now we have to configure the video boards (CL160) to synchronize their on-board time with the PPS signal using the SPAN filter. You only need to do this for one device, since the setting will be applied to both CL160 boards. Right-click on a camera and select Configure Device

  • Navigate to the Timestamp Settings tab and make sure that the Current Timing Filter lists SPAN Timing Filter, that it's set to Enable triggered resync, and that, very importantly, the filter is set to TTL Input 1. Click on “OK” to save the settings and close the window.

  • In the Streams5 log file (accessible through Ctrl+Alt+L or Display Menu) you should see synchronization messages similar to the following:

  • If you see warnings in the log window such as these, you may have an old version of the SPAN filter, which doesn't support simultaneous sync requests from 2 CL160 cards. You can get the new version here
