The data is collected by a
tool called the Video Plankton Recorder (VPR). The Video Plankton
Recorder captures images of multi-cellular organisms that have organs
and appendages with distinct visual appearances. The data set consists
of 1826 gray-scale images that belong to one of 14 classes, which have
been identified by experts. The data set is challenging from a
classification viewpoint for several reasons. Organisms are photographed
from arbitrary three-dimensional views. The size of the organisms
relative to the field of view of the camera results in many images in
which an organism is only partially visible.
